Chamois Cream/Anti-Chafe

Anti chaffing cream may not be at the top of your shopping list when looking to kit yourself out for a cycle race or a triathlon, but it should definitely figure somewhere on the list as it can be an invaluable aid both during and after the race.

If you take part in any sport that involves repetitive movements over a prolonged period of time, such as cycling or jogging, then chaffing can be a problem. Chaffing is caused by friction against the skin, usually from clothing or cycle saddles and there is an increased risk of it in events such as a triathlon because of the moisture and sweat produced during the race.

However, by using a chafe cream on susceptible areas, such as the groin, armpits and neck as well as shoulders for women, you can minimize the risk. It is best to apply the cream on these areas before you race and, if taking part in a triathlon, reapply it after each change of clothes so you are always fully protected.

But some creams, such as cycling chamois cream, can also be used after the event to alleviate soreness and also speed up the healing of any cuts, grazes or abrasions.

Chamois chafe cream is often more viscose than other protective creams and has added menthol to cool and anti-bacterial properties to aid skin recovery.
