Triathlon/Time Trial Frames

When it comes to choosing triathlon bike frames, it is important to keep your personal goals in mind. A good frame is the heart of any bicycle and finding one which suits your individual needs is the best way to ensure you get the maximum performance, comfort and enjoyment out of your sport.

Frames are usually made from one of four materials, each of which has numerous advantages and disadvantages, along with its own fans and detractors. Carbon fibre is the most recent innovation and provides great strength combined with low weight but is hugely expensive. Aluminium is lighter and cheaper but less flexible than most other materials. Titanium is another modern choice and is a good alternative to steel, the most traditional, cheapest but also the heaviest of the most common frame materials.

If you would prefer a time trial bike frame, these are available in a similar range of materials and some models can be used for both sports. However, what suits one discipline does not necessarily suit the other. A less comfortable bike frame may increase your level of performance on a flat, nicely paved road but on a bumpy road it could sap your energy and hurt your performance in the final run.

TT bike frames encourage your body to dip forward in the most aerodynamic position possible so as to reduce drag and shave vital seconds off your overall time. Although it is an efficient position, some riders may find it uncomfortable for long periods and bikes fitted with permanent rather than clip-on areobars can be more difficult to handle, especially when cornering.
