Downhill
Downhill mountain bikes are rugged machines with only one purpose in mind: to go downhill as quickly as possible. For this reason, they are designed with stability and durability in mind, keeping the rider in the saddle as they hurtle downhill. They are very much a machine for the rider who seeks thrills and excitement rather than the more endurance-based challenges of road racing or cyclo cross. The suspension sag on downhill MTB machines is much higher than for road bikes, with suspension forks typically sized at 180 to 203mm. Downhill bikes are also often fitted with a chain guide and disc brakes due to the rugged nature of the event.
Three-inch wheel diameters are not uncommon and bikes tend to heavy, with bike weights of over 22 kilos not unknown. Overall, they are not really suitable for the casual rider looking for a versatile machine and are intended for a very specialised purpose. They are difficult to ride uphill, for obvious reasons and competitors in downhill events will largely push or carry their machines to the starting point, often using uphill automated transport. The turning circle of the bikes is also seriously reduced thanks to the triple clamp forks which tend to be used at the front of the machine.
Downhill MTB manufacturers are Scott, who make more affordable models and Spanish company Orbea, whose expertise in producing more top of the range machines is widely acknowledged. For the specialist, a personalised approach is often required and professional advice should be sought before purchasing one of these downhill bikes.
