Gatorade

Gatorade is a brand manufactured by PepsiCo, distributed to over 80 countries worldwide. The brand was first created in 1965 at the University of Florida. A non-carbonated drink was created in an attempt to replenish water, carbohydrates and electrolytes which are lost in sweat during vigorous exercise. This was done using a combination of salt, sugar and water. Flavouring and food colouring was then added.

Sports drinks are in an increasingly competitive market and it takes a considerable amount of time to build a reputation. Gatorade is the leading provider for sports drink products in America. The first brand available was the Gatorade Thirst Quencher which was sold in sachets or in liquid form. The Gatorade brand prides itself on being low calorie. This is done by using natural flavours and ingredients sweetened with Stevia.

As trials and development continued, 2008 saw the introduction of the Gatorade G Series Gels product which is divided into 3 segments, namely before, during and after athletic events. Prime01 is pre game fuel used for consumption prior to athletic activity. Perform02 Gatorade powder is intended to replace fluids, refuel working muscles and replenish electrolytes during activity. Perform02 is also offered in a liquid format. Recover03 is a post workout protein and carbohydrate drink intended to hydrate and recover muscles after exercise.

The Gatorade G Series Pro range has been developed specifically for professional athletes. The addition of B vitamins provides energy and help to sustain the body's ability to burn carbohydrates. Ongoing research is taking place about the effects of exercise and nutrition on the human body.
