Base Layers
Keen cyclists will be out enjoying their sport in all weathers, come rain or shine. Cold temperatures or warm sunshine won't be a deterrent despite these conditions potentially making the sport tougher.
Base layers for cycling are an important part of your kit because they regulate the body temperature by helping to keep you warm if it's cold and cool when the temperatures are rising.
Don't be tempted simply to throw on an extra t-shirt instead of investing in the right gear. Cycling base layers should never be made from cotton which simply soaks up your sweat without drawing it away from the skin and in cold weather cotton actually draws heat from the body. In extreme cases this can lead to hypothermia and at best leaves you feeling cold and uncomfortable.
Instead, make sure your base layers are made from either merino wool or synthetics materials. The wool option is comfortable to wear and odour resistant though less effective at wicking sweat. It's also the best choice if you are cycling in very cold conditions. Base layers made from synthetic fabrics are lightweight, dry quickly and generally cost less than merino but are not as good at preventing smells forming as a result of sweat.
Whichever fabric you choose for your base layers cycling fans will also need to invest in clothing that fits snugly but still allows you maximum freedom and movement without any rubbing or chaffing.
The quality of Skins is well-known amongst cyclists and items such as their tank base layer are great additions to your cycling wardrobe.
