Cycling Shoes

Cycle shoes incorporate some of the most sophisticated technology to be integrated into cycling wear. There are a number of considerations to take into account when looking for a new pair, namely: fit, comfort, stiffness, grip and weight.

Weight is primarily a consideration for those who which to compete on the roads. Just make sure that a reduction in weight does not amount to a reduction in quality or durability.

Road shoes will often incorporate a mesh upper to reduce weight and encourage ventilation while MTB shoes do the same, with the additional intention of preventing water logging.

On the whole, the closer the shoe fits and the stiffer the sole, the more power is transferred from the foot to the peddle and the higher the performance. This comes with a trade off. Tight fitting shoes allow less circulation and stiffer shoes are difficult to walks or run in. Road bike shoes need to be stiffer while multi event or mountain bike shoes are more flexible.

Furthermore, MTB shoes will require rugged soles for trail bashing. Softer soles give gains in grip but are less durable.

If you want your shoe to clip into the peddle, check how easily the clip engages and disengages. A firmer fit will be more efficient but is riskier if you take a fall or need to jump off quickly.

Whatever kind of cycle shoes you opt for, make sure it is comfortable for the kind of cycling you intend to do. It is not worth adding a modicum of performance if it is going to make your cycling less enjoyable!
