Cycling Shorts

As in other cycle clothing, cycle shorts technology has come on in leaps and bounds over the years. Here are some basic ideas to consider when buying a new pair. All cycle shorts should be unrestrictive, while hugging the body, in order to allow full movement without being swept up the leg, which is uncomfortable and causes wind resistance.

Mountain bike shorts, or 'baggies,' are the exception. While they will have a leg hugging inner, they also have a baggy outer layer. This is because wind resistance is not a concern for MTB shorts and they will also need to be durable for taking falls and scrambling around when off of the bike.

Some cycle short use compression technology, whereby the materials are fitted and engineered to support the muscles in a way that increases power and stamina. Leg grippers or a lengthier cut help to keep the material from riding up around the groin and prevent chaffing.

Chaffing is also minimised by shaped panels and soft material, especially around the seat and crotch. Comfort is maximised through extra padding in this area, helping you to cycle for longer. This also aids in impact absorption, durability and protection for MTB shorts.

Wicking materials are essential for the shorts to be quick drying in wet conditions and to draw sweat away from the skin, helping you to stay cool in hot conditions and, conversely, warmer in cold conditions. Try the shorts on if at all possible and remember, while the features of your shorts may be helpful, they are not a substitute for a properly fitted saddle.
