Head Wear
A large proportion of body heat is reportedly lost via the head and it is true that when out cycling on a cold winter's day, exposed and non protected skulls feel chilly and uncomfortable. In particularly bad conditions, exposed ears can feel painful and are subject to future problems.
One way to combat this is to invest in cycle hats. Although cycle hats do not protect your head from accidents and collisions, they are excellent from keeping the elements at bay. Designs and materials for bike caps are varied and many can be worn beneath a cycling helmet to combine protection with warmth. Depending on your individual preferences bike hats can also look fashionable whilst being functional.
In the summer cotton cycle caps are ideal to keep the sun away from the eyes and face, as the peak provides necessary shade. Cotton is also cooling, particularly if coupled with mesh vents. Winter needs are quite different, when maintaining heat whilst wicking away any sweat moisture become all important qualities of cycle caps.
Wool or hi-tec fabric bike hats are an excellent choice to aid this mission and many are designed with ear flaps for extra protection. Choosing a bike hat that also features a four or five panel dome offers coverage for the neck area as well, ridding the need for separate ear muffs or scarves, which adds to the streamline effect. Bike caps comfortably sit beneath your helmet and are also stylish enough to be worn about town – two uses for the price of one!
