Swim

Swimming on a regular basis can reduce the risk of illnesses such as stroke, diabetes and heart disease. It can also keep your weight under control and boost your mood. Swimming is something that can be enjoyed throughout life and could even save a life. If you are unable to swim, you can learn at any age. Swimming need not be expensive as swimming equipment and swimming gear can often be hired.

Most pools cater for different abilities and tastes such as parent and toddler groups, lessons for various age groups and women only classes. Swimming is an effective and safe form of exercise for most people. However, if you have an existing health condition, it is advisable to consult your GP before embarking on a course of swimming.

All you need to start is a swimming costume. Some people like to wear goggles as swimming accessories which avoids chlorine in the water from stinging the eyes. Goggles are also a good idea for underwater swimming and, as you progress, you will find other types of swimming equipment that may be useful.

Local authorities will advise on nearby pools. Swimming accessories and swimming gear are likely to be on sale or for hire there. Many offer beginners' lessons to improve strokes and build confidence.

Some pools offer fast swimming where the pool is roped off into lanes. From the perspective of health, about half an hour of moderately intense swimming on three days a week is ideal. Treading water is a healthy activity too. Any swimming is good and small changes can make you feel great as well as providing a big difference to health.
